Llanrwst Triathlon

GOG Triathlon Club hosted the annual Llanrwst Sprint Triathlon last Sunday. The event sees athletes swim 400 metres in the Llanrwst Swimming Pool. Then embark on a 24km bike up the Conwy Valley, crossing the river at Tal Y Cafn and returning to Llanrwst Bowling Green carpark via the B5106. Triathlete then run up into Gwydir Forest for a 5km out and back testing route on road and forest trails. The 160-capacity race, which was a sell out since July, attracts a mix of abilities ranging from experienced triathlon experts to complete novices. It is run on the generosity of local sponsors and supporters and has a reputation as being one of the best small-scale club races in the region.

Llanrwst triathlon has been dominated by local triathlete Jack Smith Keegin for the past few years and sure enough on Sunday Jack powered his way through the disciplines to finish first in 1.02.15. He posted a remarkable 05.49 swim, 34.56 bike and 20.02 run. In second place in 1.05.33 was Simon Cole and third was Sam Littlewood of RAPTC Triathlon in 1.09.25.  

There were some impressive results across the age groups; starting with U17 where William Stone of Denbighshire Triathlon Club clocked 1.22.03. Kieran Williams of Tristars Conwy took the 17-19 age group win in 1.15.19. In the 20-29 category Stu Jones finished in 1.19.45. Gavin Roberts fresh from the Moel Famau Fell race the previous day took home the age group win for the 30-39 year olds. An improvement from his first tri in 2018 time John Burtons time of 1.16.05 saw him take the 40-49 age category. Russell Godwin defended his 50-59 title in 1.15.09. Bob Blackwell was first home in the 60+ category finishing in 1.26.23.

The ladies’ race was also won comfortably by triathlon novice Iona Roberts in 1.17.21. Iona clocked a notable bike split of 42.24 and backed this up with a fine 24.22 run.  Bethan Jones was second in 1.20.53 and Mared Dafydd third in 1.22.39.

In the female groups Catrin Donnelly was first to finish in the a fiercely competitive 17-19 female youths’ category in a time of 1.24.11. In her first triathlon Ellie New took the win in the F20-29 category. Victoria Cole was the first lady in her age category of 30-39 in 1.25.49. In the 40-49 age group Jane Doughton of Cadence Tri posted 1.24.39. Vicky Ronald was fastest in the 50-59 in a time of 1.26.52. Also defending her 60+ title Ann d’Albuquerque finished in 1.42.28.
